CharleyB writes "[The mill's] dam was built in 1827. It was inaccessible because of the deepness of the gorge, so the owner built a rode down to the site (still evident) and a bridge over the outlet. The falls are 20 feet high. This mill changed hands more times, producing a variety of products. In 1900 the the mill was converted into an electrical furnace, producing carbon bisulfide. The two deserted buildings you now see came about as the plant was enlarged in 1923. Its name changed to J.T. Baker in 1933 and operated into the 1960's. (Most pharmacies still have big bottles of J.T. Baker chemicals.)
In 1997, the Cascade Mill Complex was bought by the Friends of the Outlet."

CharlieB writes "Parts of the old mill dam are just above the dam. I am sure the equipment still standing was used to regulate the falls. You can see a number of good-sized remaining brick walls. It appears this was a large operation. Seneca Mill was built at the site in 1884, using stone salvaged from an old canal lock. It used waterpower to produce book paper, heavy wrapping paper, and sugar bags. By 1889 Seneca Mill produced electricity for the lights in Penn Yan."

Both mills are about 1.5 miles apart on the Keuka Lake Outlet trail system.  CharlieB writes "Scattered along that trail are small relics of a thriving community of mills that once existed."
For some pics of a large standing chimney along the same river & trail see this page.

Old farm buildings, abandoned for quite some time and now for sale, Route 342, near Calcium, Jefferson County.  Scannerman writes "The sign is perfect--emblematic of the reason so many heritage--known and unknown--now rest under asphalt or apartments of houses or shopping places. Sad, but the price we pay to have rapidly prepared food just a few minutes away..."
