From comac1103 (via Flickr.com): "This is a wonderful little schoolhouse."
The following is a bit of a departure from the buildings and structures I normally have on this site but I thought it would be of interest to visitors.  Hope M. of Perceptionphotography sent me these photos (taken in August of 2007) from Leraysville, a village swallowed up between 1939 to 1941 by the expansion of Fort Drum.  For more info see here.  The location can only be accessed by civilians during Memorial Day each year.

On 4/13/12 Tughill writes "I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the abondoned house on Kubinski Road off of Cobb Road. I recently moved to the area and I drive by this house all the time just to look at it. Down the street a little bit in the woods you can see an old foundation of somekind as well. It looks like it must have been a beautiful house back in its day. I just thought it would be neat to know the history behind it. Thanks!"

On 12/18/14 Jamie writes "I looked into buying some property in this area just down the street, which was actually being sold by the gentleman that owns this home,f rom what i understand the man who owns it loved the home so much that he cant find it in him to part with it. The lot i was looking at buying surrounds this home, but the home was not included in the sale. But i too drive by it just to look.it must have been something in its day."

Donald D. writes: "Growing up in Felts mills I attended school there from Kindergarten until they closed the school. My 6th year of school was in Great Bend.  There were Four class rooms in the Felts Mills School.  Kindergarten had its own room, 1ST and 2nd were together on the first floor.  Also, there was the restrooms which were located there too.  The second floor class rooms were, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th together along, with a music room and the Principal's office.  The basement held the gym and boiler room/maintenance room."
Frederick C: "I attended the school in the mid 30's. At the time, there was no kindergarten. Mother talked with the principal who allowed me to enter first grade before I was eligible where I stayed for two years."
1/23/14 j.f. medwick writes "played a lot of dodgeball in the basement and football/baseball out back in 2nd grade here as a wild youth....a very innocent time and wonderful time "in the country"...early 60's second grade...."
5/2/15 Brooke writes "It was converted to apts in the 90's and I lived there! It was always so creepy! But I loved it and have such good memories of felts mills."
3/22/2024 Melanie writes "I lived in this building in 1998. It was very creepy and all of us who lived there at the time were convinced it was haunted. Noises outside your door, but no one there. TVs turning themselves on and off, footsteps in the hall but no one there. Nightmares. I did love the chalk board still being there though."

I thought that this was a very unique old building so I also took a picture of it, after Hope M. sent me the previous photo.  The Fall foliage in this shot is particularly striking.

Felts Mills School, Rutland District 7. The school itself was closed in the 1970's.  It had a total of four rooms, plus utility rooms and a gym in the cellar.  Some more info can be found on Lynn Thornton's site at this site.
Update 5/1/13 - this building is being re-used and renovated, see comments below by Hareen and Rachel.

From comac1103 (via Flickr.com): "What a great shot and yes the building is cool and the fall colors compliment it great."
From kennethpensyl (via Flickr.com): "Wow thats awesome."
Michael K writes: "This building was listed for sale this past spring.  It was represented as six one bedroom apartments and listed for about $39,900. When I called they already had three offers."
Steve H. writes "The School is actually under renovation right now to be used again as an apartment building. I am quite unsure when it will be done but I am anticipating its reopening."
Bob C. writes "I attended kindergarten in this school in 1956-57. Miss (Mrs.?) Galloway was my teacher."
Holly C writes "I grew up in Felts Mills and frequented this building a lot as a child out exploring our neighborhood. I had been in it before it was renovated into apartment buildings and have to say it was a bit creepy. It was first renovated into apartment buildings in the early 90's. I had a friend who's family moved into one of the apartments and the owners of the building actually left the old black boards up as part of the walls in the living room areas of the apartments, I always thought that was a unique touch and homage to the old school. I don't know exactly what happened or why the apartments were no longer rented out, but last time I was in the area it was abandon and in VERY rough shape. I hope the county saves this treasure and puts it on the National Register of historic landmarks. It would be a shame ! for anyone to tear it down."
On 11/04/11 jeremy writes "I used to live there as a child in elementary school. I have had constant nightmares throughout my life, even today. I am petrified of this place. I would heat and see things I could not explain. I live in Las Vegas now and when I visit my family, I have to drive by this building. There was a suicide on the top floor so maybe that is the cause of many nightmares."
On 1/29/12 S Heeren writes "This place is still being renovated. It has a new roof and there are lights on now frequently at night. Hopefully it will reopen soon. I hate to see it sit there."
On 4/30/13 Rachel writes "I currently am renting an apartment on the top floor. It is under renovation and quite a beautiful old building. It still has the original tin ceilings and door frames for the classrooms."
